Music History

MTV was one of the first music television programme that started on August 1st 1981. This was produced originally to play music videos on air. It had a massive impact in the music industry. It was marketed and was advertised very well. This was because of slogans such as “I want my MTV” and “MTV in here”. This helped sell MTV and attract its target audience. Which was people who listened to all genres of music.
MTV ‘s choice was to focus on non music programming which had been contested since 1990s, this then became a popular television programme for people to catch there favourite artists. Since then MTV has departed from music programming and is now known for producing programmes aimed at a target audience of teenagers.

Classic genre and conventions

There are many music videos that are similar and many other ones that are completely different as they consist on different conventions
Rock music: the typical conventions of rock music consist on mise en scene such as dark lighting, dark make up and consists on many different musical instruments such as guitar and drums etc. This is similar to indie music as they consist of many different instrumentals and consists on some sort of performance element. The differences between indie music and rock music is that indie music usually consists on a specific concept. This puts indie music videos in the performance and concept factors specifically.
Pop music consists on many different conventions such as it being up beat and being consistent of dance routines and bright costumes and bright lighting. It also consists on fast passed cuts and tends to be concept videos but people would argue that adding dance routines shows aspects of performance.
These are the main genre groups tend to base there project around but my group decided to go with hip hop to challenge the typical genres chosen.
